Snail Farms

The snail farms of onefoot are located in specially chosen areas in Marathon and Karpenisi.

The design and the interior layout of the greenhouse which hosts the snails during the period of fattening were based on a model suggested by the Centre de Formation CFPPA Chateaufarine which is located in Besançon, France.

The snail farms consist of greenhouses of 1,000m2 and 1,200m2 with production capacities of 4,500 and 5,400 kilos respectively. The total expanse of the fattening area is 11,600m2 with a production capacity of up to 55 tonnes of snails per annum.

Snail Farms

The chosen areas are of strategic importance for snail farming and onefoot’s operations.

Characteristics

The snail farms at onefoot are located in specially chosen areas in Marathon and Karpenisi. They consist of greenhouses and their construction plans are approved by the Aristotle University of Thessalonica.

The design and the interior layout of the greenhouse which hosts the snails during the period of fattening were based on a model suggested by the Centre de Formation CFPPA Chateaufarine which is located in Besançon, France. Its design simulates the natural habitat of the snail and guarantees their normal development; ensuring the provision of all the necessary elements for the fattening of the snails whilst also providing protection from the weather, predators and other potential dangers. Finally, the ergonomic design of the snail farm facilitates and normalizes the work of the breeder and minimizes harvest time.

Locations

Marathon

The historical location of Marathon was chosen to be the base of onefoot’s installations in Attica for two very important reasons.

Firstly, Marathon is renowned for the quality of its soil and its temperate climate, whilst as a coastal region it maintains natural humidity levels, which are ideal for the growth and development of snails throughout the year.

Secondly, the area of Marathon is located very close to Athens. This makes it very easy for both product distribution and client accessibility, for clients wishing to visit the site.

Our Marathon farm is located 43 kilometres from Athens in the plains of Marathon, close to the Olympic Rowing Centre in the coastal area of Schinias. The breeding area covers 5,600m2 whilst the total area of the farm is 8,200m2. The breeding season starts in September and ends in May.

Karpenisi

The area of Karpenisi was chosen for it possesses important characteristics for the growth of snails. The farm is located at an altitude of 850 metres, above sea level, in the village of Kallithea which is just 2km from the town of Karpenisi. The quality of the soil combined with a mild, cool climate in summer creates the ideal conditions for snail breeding during this summer period. So, in conjunction with the farm in Marathon we can achieve product availability throughout the year. Also, the strategic location of this region allows direct distribution and better customer service to clients in the northern regions of the country. The breeding space covers 6,000m2 whilst the total area of the farm is 15,500m2. The breeding season starts in April and ends in October.
